DOT defines a hazardous material as any item or chemical that is a risk to public safety or the environment when being transported or moved in commerce. Hazardous materials are regulated under DOT's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration regulations (49 CFR 100-199), including the Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR 171-180).
DOT stands for the United States Department of Transportation. The acronym DOT is often used in reference to specific standards in the handling and transportation of hazardous materials.
While they function separately, there can be overlap for both OSHA and DOT standards for hazardous material. That means businesses will need to be trained on both the relevant requirements. Although the standards of the DOT and OSHA are distinct and independent, it would be a good idea to train for both DOT and OSHA standards.
The main difference between DOT and OSHA is that DOT has authority over interstate commerce when it comes to handling hazardous material; while OSHA has authority over interstate commerce except when handling hazardous material. The DOT also has regulations regarding the transportation, packaging, and handling of these products.
OSHA regulations oversee worker safety and health, as well as employers' responsibility to protect their safety at the warehouse, dock, construction site, and other locations where trucks deliver and pick up loads around the country.
The DOT mandates hazmat training for US workers handling hazardous materials. This includes all managers and personnel who prepare hazmat shipments for ground, air, or marine transit. This training ensures proper shipment and transfer of hazardous materials. The DOT defines a hazardous material as objects or chemicals posing a risk to public safety or the environment during commercial transportation.
DOT HazMat training includes loading and unloading, packaging, managing hazmat documentation, and operating vehicles transporting hazardous chemicals. To ensure the safe handling and transportation of hazardous substances, workers must take this training.
"The support team really helped me out! I really needed to get this training done for work and they definitely helped make it happen! Best support group I've ever dealt with! Thanks again!"
